‘What Happened to the American Dream?’
May 29, 2007
National webcast polled many young adult Americans and discussed their personal finance habits and the effects it has on their future. The results show that many young adult Americans, ages 18 to 34, are putting off major life decisions — such as buying a home, paying for medical insurance, continuing higher education, and getting married — for financial reasons.
NEW YORK, May 29 — On Wednesday, May 23, 2007, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Ad Council and Harris Interactive hosted a live, national Webcast titled “What Happened to the American Dream?” Representatives of the three organizations discussed the personal finance habits of young Americans and the effects on their future. The Webcast also discussed steps young adult Americans can take to manage their money more effectively.
The basis of the Webcast was a new poll of young adults conducted by Harris on behalf of the AICPA. The results show that many young adult Americans, ages 18 to 34, are putting off major life decisions — such as buying a home, paying for medical insurance, continuing higher education, and getting married — for financial reasons.
The poll was released as part of the AICPA/Ad Council public service advertising campaign, Feed the Pig(TM). The campaign features public service announcements and educational outreach designed to help young Americans take control of their personal finances and realize the benefits of saving for every stage of life.
